Dok:Sør a new and appropriate documentary award
During the last decade, the status of documentary films as dry educational films has been disproven in earnest by a number of powerful documentaries that compete with feature films in both quality and appeal. With the new documentary award Dok:Sør, Films from the South provides support for DVD distribution of a documentary that deserves a larger audience than those attending the festival. What qualities should such a film have? - We look primarily for artistically good projects that are able to touch the audience in a special way, Julie Ova, Head of Programming of Films from the South, states.– Documentaries that tell stories with a broader appeal than to just people with special interests.
Over the last few years, the number of documentaries at Films from the South has grown, in step with the increasing attention given to documentaries. So it is appropriate that this category will get its own award. Ova explains that the basis for the new documentary prize is primarily the emergence of an incredible number of extremely gooddocumentaries.
- It seems like payback time for the introduction of handheld cameras, which early on led to a number of films that was amateurishly made. Now we see that the quality of documentaries can compete with feature films, she says.
