The film’s central characters are all searching for love or sexual satisfaction. The film is told in exquisite images, most often interiors scenes of cramped living spaces or at a watery construction site. As the jigsaw puzzle gradually falls into place, we see an image of a Kuala Lumpur with a Chinese minority and a strong presence of migratory labourers. In the middle of all this, we meet the actor Kang-sheng Lee, Tsai’s usual alter ego, in two main roles, both without him uttering a single word. We have to wonder what he is thinking and this contributes further to the mysteriousness of the film. bb
