Due to a lesser role by his fan Quentin Tarantino, the latest film by Japanese enfant terrible Takashi Miike has also become known outside his usual followers. This is an über-cool and violent potpourri that mixes elements from Japanese samurai movies and Italian spaghetti westerns. It’s an energetic explosion of exaggerated characters and excessive scenes of violence, the whole thing filmed in a hyper-stylised manner, with feverish camera movement, framing and editing pace. Everything ends of course with a mastodon of a shoot-out! The plot: two clans are fighting about a gigantic treasure hidden in a village. kk
