War Child is an award-winning survival story from a Sudan ravaged by civil war. The rapper Emmanuel Jal was separated from his parents early in his childhood and ended up as a child soldier in the rebel army in the south of the country. He now lives in the UK and uses music both to come to terms with and express his story.
Jal’s highly personal story becomes the key to an investigation into Sudan’s recent history and the political and economical circumstances for the power situation in the country. In addition to past events, we join him, among other things, when he returns to his family in Sudan for the first time since his escape.
While the film is soberly told, conveyed through Jal’s personal, sincere and soul-searching voice-over, it is also extraordinarily powerful – perhaps precisely because the filmmakers avoid unnecessary melodramatic wallowing in misery.
