In a rage, a teacher murders a boy. Another boy is bred, for the sole purpose of avenging his brother’s death. Kazakh master Ermek Shinarbaev’s collaboration with Korean-Russian writer Anatoli Kim yielded three great films, of which this beautiful, profoundly unsettling work is the most remarkable. In the 1940's, hundreds of thousands of Koreans in the Russian Far East were forcibly displaced overnight on Stalin’s orders. The Korean diaspora remained a forbidden topic for many years. Revenge was the first film to tell the story of the tragedy; it is a true odyssey, both geographically and psychologically. red
