Our Grand Despair is a surprisingly warm an authentic portrayal of human emotions and relations. It is brought to the screen by Turkey’s new up-and-coming director, Seyfi Teoman, who adapted it from the novel with the same name, in cooperation with author Barış Bıçakçı. Convincing performances by the actors bring the characters to life and one can’t help but feel and laugh along at their experiences.

A tragic accident turns young girl Nihal’s life upside down, and she in turn disrupts the bespectacled and bookish Çetin and his more down-to-earth friend Ender’s newly achieved bachelor life. The middle aged duo barely gets to realise their childhood dream of moving in together before they suddenly find themselves with the responsibility of the young and beautiful, but traumatised Nihal. The relationship between the three and their life together is the essence of this film. The unique, almost marital relationship between Ender and Çetin is especially noteworthy. Before long, they discover that they're both falling in love with the pretty, demure, much younger university student. Our Grand Despair is a beautiful, warm and humorous feel good film that will bring back to life hope and faith in our relations with each other. åhrj
