The Great Kilapy
Loosely based on true events, this is the story of a black seducer of white bourgeoisie women in 1960’s Luanda and Lisbon. Luckily for protagonist Joãozinho, he is the right man at the right time, and he seems to get away with anything. Even surprisingly be celebrated for it once the communists take over in 1975. Lázaro Ramos fits this role like a glove. One of the movie’s strengths is that it successfully transports us to that 60’s era of cabriolet cars, expensive drinks, and classy women that most people wouldn’t expect existed in a country like Angola. gil
Suitable for persons 15 years and older.
Zézé Gamboa sees himself as part of the wave of African filmmakers taking on the task of reconstructing the national identity. His debut film, Hero, was released in 2004. It too had recent history as its theme, and showed the impact the civil war had on the prevailing Angolans. The Great Kilapy is his second film.
