Fuga
Fuga combines the deeply human and tragic with occasionally surreal events. The young and talented but fragile composer Eliseo Montalbán (Benjamin Vicuna) stands on the brink of success when an accident occurs. The female pianist he has commissioned for his magnum opus, and which is also his mistress, falls dead on the stage during the premiere. With her dead, Eliseo's last connection to reality disappears.
After getting strong visions from his childhood, when he found his sister raped and killed over a piano, he uses an axe to cut up five pianos and goes straight into psychiatric treatment. At the same time in the film, but a approximately some years later, the less gifted musician Ricardo Cappa (Gastón Pauls) starts to search for the vanished music of Eliseo. When he finds fragments of it, he first tries to pretend to have made it himself, but quickly becomes revealed because of the music's genius.
The then 30 years old Pablo Larrain made his directorial debut with Fuga. The film is a strong insight into a troubled artist's mind, and impressive debut from Larrain. Tom Hulce created an iconic version of the young Mozart in Amadeus (1984) and Klaus Kinski was a rabid cult edition of the Italian violinist Niccolò Paganini in Paganini (1989). With the eccentric original music and the many dramatic sequences as a backdrop, Benjamin Vicunas achievement as the fictional Eliseo Montalbán is many ways just as good.
Pablo Larrain (b. 1976) from Santiago in Chile is a director known for the «Pinochet trilogy»; Tony Manero (2008) Post Mortem (2010) and No (2012). Post Mortem was nominated for the Golden Lion in Venice, No was nominated for an Oscar and won first prize in the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes. El Club (2015) received the Silver Bear in Berlin.
