An epic tale of modern (and near future) China from one of the country's most adored directors, Jia Zhanke. Mountains May Depart is in many ways a sociological study of a society undergoing riveting change, told through the story of one woman's life. The film is divided into three parts, the first taking place right before the new millennium commences, the second in present day and the third in the near future, 2025. When the film premiered in Cannes’ Main Competition critics described it as an ambitious and deeply humanistic film. In addition to an amazing performance by the lead actress and an engaging plot, Mountains May Depart undoubtedly makes the best use of the Pet Shop Boys' hit song Go West ever seen on film!

Jia Zhankge (b. 1970) is a leading Chinese director who competes in the main competition in Cannes with the majority of his films. He is known for making social realistic films with a documentary-like style, and his films often focus on the fate of marginalized people in Chinese society.
