How to bring down a dictator? Let Coca-Cola’s appealing and jolly commercials inspire you, of course!
In 1973 the Chilean military carried out a coup against President Allende, and General Augusto Pinochet overtook power. After 15 years of dictatorship, Pinochet struggled to maintain his legitimacy, nationally and internationally, and was forced in 1988 to initiate a referendum. With 15 minutes on TV each every evening for a period of 27 days, the dictator’s supporters and the opposition did what they could to convince the viewers to give them their vote.
The skilled producer René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal) and his colleagues get tangled into a dangerous political game, as their NO-commercials attract much broader attention than the YES-commercials. There’s a presumption that Pinochet will win the elections, as a result of fear for the dictator and electoral fraud. However, as the NO-commercials night after night surpass the YES-commercials, the tension level rises. NO is based on actual events, and documents an important chapter in Chiles political history.
NO is director and producer Pablo Larraín’s third film about the repressive dictatorship of Pinochet (previous films areTony Manero and Post Mortem). His latest film The Club (2015) won the Jury Grand Prix at this year’s Berlinale. NO received an Oscar nomination in 2012, won the main award of Directors’ Forthnight in Cannes, and received the audience award at TIFF 2013.
