The Wanderer's Shadow

In a Bogotá where it is impossible to get a job, it is certainly not a simple life the cripple Mañe is trying his best to live. His origami products don’t give him a peso in income, and he has not been able to pay his rent for over a year. His landlord, the alcoholic ex-sergeant Osvaldo, beats and harasses him, and in addition to this Mañe gets his fake leg regularly stolen by the bad guys in his street.

La Sombre Del Caminante is not explicitly political in its expression, but through encounters with originals such as Mañe and his new friend El silletero (the man who carries people around for money) we realise that Colombia is a country inhabiting a huge amount of lives destroyed by more than 50 years of civil war. When life in the countryside turns too violent and too dangerous, people such as Mañe, who have brutally lost their families, flees to the capital in search for a better life. However, the past always hunts the victims of war, and with gruesome experiences in their luggage, for Mañe and El silletero to establish a relationship turns out to be severely challenging.

It takes some time before you get the reminder of Colombia’s harsh reality and history. Before this happens, though, you have had plenty of time to reflect on how difficult a life in severe poverty must be.

The Colombian director Ciro Guerra (b. 1981) is one of the most talented directors of South America. We screen all his films at this year's festival. La sombra del caminante (2004), The Wind Journeys (2009) and Embrace of the Serpent (2015), which won an award during this year's Cannes Film Festival.
