When a stranger arrives in a small, intimate village in South Korea, mysterious and violent events start to take place. People who normally live a quiet and tranquil life change personality and become possessed by evil forces. The result is quite drastic and affects the small community deeply. For the local policeman Jong-Goo, it all becomes much more than he is accustomed to tackle and when his own family is affected, his life is transformed into a desperate struggle to discover the culprit behind the evil forces that cause people to do the cruelest of things.

With The Wailing, Na Hong-Jin, who is responsible for works like The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, presents his perhaps most intense film. This is a South Korean thriller of the highest quality. It is dark, violent, supernatural and with a good measure of dark humor. The film is a firework of a thriller that includes everything that belongs to the genre, and more. Partly serial killer movie, partly supernatural horror movie, partly humorous and, simultaneously, as intense as David Fincher's Seven. The duration of the movie is just over 150 minutes, during which not a single moment is wasted. The audience is dragged helplessly around in an obscure and supernatural world with unpredictable characters, from start to finish.

As so often is the case in the case of films produced in South Korea, nothing is spared with regards to quality. Everything works to perfection, both in front and behind the camera. The universe we are introduced to is highly fictitious. This is a world where it never stops raining, where rules change from scene to scene, and the village idiot is both a policeman and the hero of the film. The Wailing is not only extremely good entertainment, but also a quality film through and through.

Na Hong-jin (b. 1974) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter. For the feature film debut The Chaser (2008), he won the award for Best Director both at the Grand Bell Awards and the Korean Film Awards. His second film, The Yellow Sea (2010), was shown in the Un Certain Regard section at the festival in Cannes. The Wailing (2016) was shown at Cannes earlier this year.
